Our Mission
Instituto Cimarrón is dedicated to promoting programming, research, and education that center the artistic and cultural works of marginalized communities of color, particularly those whose histories and contributions intersect with advocacy and social justice.
Named after the Afro-descendants in Latin America and the Caribbean who engaged in marronage-acts of resistance and the formation of free communities. Instituto Cimarrón uses this powerful legacy as the foundation of its work.
Our mission is to harness the transformative power of artistic expression and cultural research to empower communities, celebrate our respective heritages, and foster a society where culture is synonymous with freedom.
We believe that culture, art, and research are vital tools for social change and that by honoring the legacies of Afro-descendants and other marginalized groups, we can create a more just and equitable future. Our guiding principle, "Our Culture is Our Freedom," reflects our commitment to artistic freedom, cultural autonomy, and social liberation.
Our Vision
Instituto Cimarrón envisions a world where cultural expression is a catalyst for social transformation and liberation. By amplifying the voices and legacies of marginalized communities of color, the organization strives for a future where the arts, cultural research, and advocacy foster equity, celebrate diversity, and ensure that freedom, justice, and representation are at the heart of society. It imagines a world where culture is a driving force for both individual empowerment and collective social justice.
